Aloe Ferox

Aloe ferox is a medicinal and attractive succulent native to South Africa. It is a cousin to aloe vera and a pharmaceutical source of aloe used as a purgative. The gel in the leaves has virtually all the same uses and health benefits as aloe vera. Adapts well to home or greenhouse environment. Can grow up to 10 feet (3.0 m) in height. Its flowers are orange or red, and stand between 2 and 4 feet (0.61 and 1.2 m) above the leaves. Succulents are susceptible to root rot, so you must use well draining soil!  They tend to thrive on neglect – just water them when the top inch of soil is dried out.

How to Grow Aloe Ferox from Seed

Aloe ferox is hardy in zones 11+. The seeds can be sown indoors at any time of year. To start, fill small pots or trays with a light and well draining compost. Scatter the seed onto the top of the compost and cover lightly. Cover the pot with plastic or a glass container. Keep soil moist (not soggy) and don’t let the pots completely dry out. The seeds germinate at temp. of 22-25°C (70-75°F). Some seedlings may appear at around 30 days and up to 180 days.
